The Shaykh meets an indigenous tribal chief in Brazil

The Shaykh meets an indigenous tribal chief in Brazil

During his stay in Brazil, Shaykh Mohamed Faouzi al-Karkari met a chief of one of the tribes of the Xingu people, an indigenous Amerindian population divided into 16 tribes in eastern Brazil.

The chief and representative of the tribe, Professor and poet João, was accompanied by his wife, a specialist in the indigenous languages of Brazil, his daughter, an archaeologist at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, and his son, a poet by profession.

João shared with Sidi Shaykh the history of the indigenous tribes of Brazil and their culture, but also the genocide they suffered during colonisation. The exchange took place in particular through poetry, since João had the pleasure of reciting a poem bearing witness to the massacre they suffered in 1914.

Prof. Waldares, an archaeologist at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, offered Sidi Shaykh a book she had written, a scientific study and research on the natural (and medical) treatments for which the Amerindians are renowned.

For his part, Shaykh Mohamed Faouzi al-Karkari also had the pleasure of offering them a gift that is dear to him, a copy of the Qur’an translated into Portuguese.

A magnificent meeting, whose emotion can be read on the faces of everyone present.
