Ahmad ibn Muhammad, dit Belkarti (Janun)

Ahmad ibn Muhammad, known as Ahmad Belkarti, nicknamed “Janun” (“the moon” in Berber), was one of the Idrisid rulers of northern Morocco in the early tenth century. He is a direct forefather of Shaykh Mohamed Faouzi Al Karkari.
A context of threats
He shared control of the northern and western regions of Morocco with his brothers Ibrahim and al-Qasim, in a context of increasingly frequent Fatimid and Umayyad incursions.
Withdrawal to the mountains
Faced with external threats, he helped maintain Idrisid power but eventually withdrew to the mountainous areas of the Rif. He died around 920.
Descendants
He left several children, among them Moulay ʿIyyad, a local governor in the Ksar el-Kebir region.
