Dawud ibn Makhla

Died 1332 · Egypt · disciple of Ibn ʿAta' Allah

Dawud ibn Makhla was a disciple of Ibn ʿAta' Allah al-Iskandari and the master of Muhammad Wafa. Sources on his life are scarce, but his role in transmitting the school of Alexandria is well attested.

A disciple of Ibn ʿAta' Allah

He belonged to the circle of Ibn ʿAta' Allah (d. 1309), third great figure of the Shadhili way and author of the Hikam. This circle brought together, in Cairo and Alexandria, jurists and Sufis for whom the spiritual path was compatible with religious science.

The master of Muhammad Wafa

He initiated Muhammad Wafa (1302-1363), future founder of the Wafaiyya, and thus ensured the transmission of Shadhili teaching to the next generation.
