Al-Hasan al-Muthanna
661 – 715 · Medina · great-grandson of the Prophet Muhammad
Al-Hasan al-Muthanna (“the Second Hasan”) is the son of al-Hasan ibn ʿAli and the father of ʿAbd Allah al-Kamil. He is one of the direct ancestors of the Idrisids.
Birth and family
He was born in Medina in 661, son of al-Hasan ibn ʿAli and Khawla. He bears the nickname “al-Muthanna” to distinguish him from his father, whose name he shares.
At Karbala
In 680, at the age of nineteen, he accompanied his uncle al-Husayn at the battle of Karbala. Wounded, he was captured but survived thanks to the intervention of a maternal relative serving in the Umayyad army.
Marriage and descendants
He married his cousin Fatima, daughter of al-Husayn, one of the survivors of Karbala. Several children were born of this union, among them ʿAbd Allah al-Kamil, ancestor of the Idrisids of Morocco.
Death
He died around 715. He has remained known for his piety and scholarship.
