The Zawiya of Moulay Mohamed Ibn Qaddour Al Wakili Al Karkari

PRESENTATION OF THE ZAWIYA OF MOULAY MOHAMMED IBN QADDOUR EL-WAKILY EL-KARKARI (d. 1884) THE SHAYKH OF SHAYKH EL-BOUZIDI, WHO LIVED 40 YEARS IN THE MOUNTAIN OF KARKAR SERVING HIM

MAY ALLAH SANCTIFY THEIR SECRET

The Zawiya of Moulay Mohamed Ibn Kaddour Al Wakili Al Karkari

1: Main dwelling of Shaykh el-Wakily el-Karkari: a small room with a corner for wudu, a corner for resting and a corner for living, all within a few square metres

2: Small kitchen; the rest belongs to the zawiya

Dwelling and zawiya built in 1844

Nicknamed Ibn Qaddour in reference to his uncle Qaddour, who raised him after the death of his parents. Having learned the Islamic sciences from the Shaykh of the village, he once also wished to take from this Shaykh the science of astronomy, but his Shaykh of the path (probably Sidi el-Mahdji) refused, in favour of a science befitting his rank as a Sharif. He then became, by way of the Ism el-A‘dham, a Knower of Allah and a Master educator. Among his disciples were Shaykh el-Bouzidi (may Allah sanctify his secret) and also Shaykh el-Hibri (may Allah sanctify his secret), who founded his own path, the Hibriyya.

A few photos detailing the dwelling.

Here are the mountains of Karkar and the zawiya in a general view. To the left one heads into the mountain, where the Shaykh used to perform his dhikr all year round at 3 specific places on the mountain. Sidi Shaykh el-Bouzidi (may Allah sanctify his secret) served him, bringing the water for ablutions among other things, and waited beside his Shaykh, attentive to his slightest need, for 40 years of his life.

Approaching the zawiya, which also served as the Shaykh’s dwelling. The fuqara of the time lived under the trees or in small makeshift shelters scattered to the right and left around this dwelling.

On approaching one can see that the entrance is slightly closed off by stones, and it was with the permission to enter given by Sidi Shaykh Mohammed Fawzi (may Allah sanctify his secret) that I took the photos inside the dwelling.

Immediately to the left of the zawiya, and thus outside it, there is a dwelling belonging to the children of the family.

Finally we enter the modest dwelling that characterises the people of the time, and also the Shaykh’s zawiya (may Allah sanctify his secret).
