Moulay Salem ibn ʿIyyad
Tenth century · Rif / Jbala · ancestor of many sharifs of northern Morocco
Moulay Salem ibn ʿIyyad witnessed the gradual fall of the Idrisids. He is cited as the ancestor of many sharifs of northern Morocco, among them ʿAbd as-Salam ibn Mashish, and marks the passage from the princely elite to the rural sharifs of the Rif.
Between power and withdrawal
Moulay Salem stands at the turning point between the princely Idrisids, involved in local politics, and the rural Idrisids who, by withdrawing from the affairs of power, blended into the mountains of the Rif.
Towards religious teaching
He turned to the spiritual life and religious teaching among the Jbala tribes and had numerous descendants, made up of figures known for their piety and wisdom.
Descendants
Between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries, his line continues through Moulay ʿImrane, Moulay Jaber, Moulay ʿAlal, Moulay ʿAbd al-ʿAziz, Moulay Meʿzouz, Moulay ʿAzouz, Moulay Moussa, Moulay ʿIssa and Moulay Messʿoud, down to Moulay Mimoun Abu Wakil.
