Karkari tent in Bergem (Morocco)

Some time ago we presented to you the fuqara of the Karkariya of Bergem (Morocco) and their modest dwelling, a tent that greatly surprised me in our time!

Today we know a little more about their way of life from our conversations with the fuqara of Bergem, and it was during an invitation to share their table that the idea came to show you again these modest people, so happy with so little.

An invitation worthy of the greatest restaurants, with the most rudimentary kitchen utensils.

Here is our restaurant for a day

Built by the women alone, who master the art of a solid dwelling that holds up in bad weather. The photo below was taken at another place; at present this tent is still in the Bergem region, but where the grass is more abundant (I think, because they are shepherds, as we shall see below).

Here is the dining room

For a king’s feast that I will not describe so as not to shock sensitive souls. You will notice the layout, which differs from the earlier photos (see the album link below). They too sometimes need to rearrange their home 🙂

Note the height of the tent, which makes moving around rather painful, in addition to the poles supporting the structure. The seated position is required for a man who respects himself (humour); they have the care of the livestock, which is not easy. That said, nothing is easy at our hosts’ (for us); they cope with it very well.

How it works in Morocco

Livestock owners hire out their skills as shepherds. They are entrusted with a flock (sheep or goats in this region) and take care of letting them graze on the grass they find in the surroundings. They receive a monthly sum of money, in addition to feed for the animals. They own a cow for their daily milk consumption. Yes, here the Vegan luxury does not exist, except in our societies, which have been negligent in consumption and so can afford this kind of extravagance. As there is neither running water nor electricity, supplies come in water containers and, finally, solar energy replaces candles, as modernity requires, you will agree.
